| In 1972 George Sims and Chris Barnett demonstrated the prototype TELEPEN
barcode reader.
Operating from a single room in the attractively
renovated old school building in Wheathampstead, they
also developed the very first library circulation control
system to run on a microcomputer. From this small
beginning has grown SB Electronic Systems, the longest
established barcode company in the world and it's British.
Well-known throughout the library world for its TELEPEN products, SB Electronic Systems has continued to design and develop innovative barcode products using the latest technology. Recent examples are the TELESCAN portable data acquistion unit, and the LASER+, the smallest hand-held laser scanner in the world. Recent software includes the Windows NT version of SENTRY, the Telepen access control system. Many of these new products have been made possible by the company's continued investment in both its design and development capability and its manufacturing facility. To maintain the high quality of Telepen products, all development and manufacturing of hardware is in-house. Typically, the small size and competitive price of the TELESCAN and LASER+ is due to the use of the latest automatic surface mount techniques. SB Electronic Systems have become renowned for their Total Solution Systems including the SENTRY Access Control System, which is already in use in many of the U.K. and Ireland's leading Academic Institutions.
